Topic :Upholstery of homemade furniture
I want to put twin beds in my daughter's bedroom. I want to build a box out of wood and stain the top of it and have a piece of glass cut to fit the top of it. On all sides of the box I want to "attach" material with the material being padded in some way or myself padding it in someway behind the material. Then I want to trim the corners and around the top with material piping. This box/headboard will sit in the corner of her room and each twin bed will be against the walls with the head of each bed up to and attached to the box using this as a headboard for each bed. The box and the beds will be in the shape of an "L" if this helps describe what I am wanting. I have an idea on how to do everything but attaching the padding, material and piping. I'm not sure what is the best way to attach all of this and it look professional and not like I just went in and did it myself. Please help me with some answers and advice. |
Upholstery isn't my cup of tea, but I have done some in the past. Basically, the first thing you want to remember when building the headboards is to make sure there's no sharp corners or edges. Make sure they're all sanded well to avoid the fabric ripping on the edges.
I use 3M spray adhesive and either cotton batting (rolled) or 1/8" foam to cover all surfaces to be covered. Then I start in the back of the piece with the fabric. I line up the fabric the way I want it and staple it on (about 1 staple every inch), pulling snug down the piece as I go. Then move to the opposite side and start at one corner and work down the piece pulling snug both down and across while stapling. You don't want to pull so tight that you create stretch marks in the fabric. Repeat the process for the other sides.
I use decorative piping glued on with hot glue to cover the staples when I'm done. With a little creativity you can manage to tuck and fold the seams so you won't need to do any sewing. Good luck and let me know how it went. |
