Topic:Drain trap for a washing machine

Does a washing machine drain line on a new installation require the use of a trap and if so why? I am installing a washer/dryer in my garage to wash mechanics type rags and other greasy, dirty items that I don't want mixed with my household items. Any tips or suggestions that you have on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Yes, the drain does require a trap. It's to prevent sewer gas which is both stinky and flammable from backing up the drain. You really don't want a methane build-up in the garage due to the risk of explosion.

As for any tips, make sure the items are 100% grease free before putting them in the dryer. Greases will build up in the vent and eventually cause a fire.

Also, they do sell grease traps for water lines. They are mostly used in restaurants, but I have seen them installed in commercial laundries where grease is a problem. Every month you lift the lid and scoop out the grease to clean it. This will keep the grease from clogging up your house main line.
