Topic :Fireplace smoke backing up into the basement
This summer my husband had the chimney cleaned. Original there was a wire screen on the outside top of the chimney. The chimney cleaner suggested he install some kind of outside cap on top of chimney. Now whenever we build a fire the basement has a strong smoke smell which seems to come from a back draft of the furnace. We didn't have this problem last year before he installed the cap. What should we do? |
| By all means call the sweep back and have him inspect and fix the work. Something is very wrong and probably not safe. It would seem he created the problem....have him fix it. A chimney cap shouldn't have that effect, there very likely is another problem someplace else. |
