The best way to sharpen reel blades that you can do yourself with good results is to buy reel sharpening paste. It comes with a hand crank to turn the wheel. You simply spread the paste on the blades and cutter base and crank for a while. The paste is an abrasive which grinds the blade to the perfect angle because it never leaves the mower. The paste comes in a tub and can be a bit hard to find. I have gotten it at Servi-Star hardware a few years back, though I can't remember the brand name. They give you plenty to keep it sharp for years to come.
I would suggest NOT using a file to sharpen the blade. It's impossible to keep the angle correct the entire length of the blade, and therefore does more harm than good. |
