Topic :Poison ivy
Today’s tip is short, but very important if you are working around your yard. It’s about poison ivy. This summer, poison ivy has thrived due to the warm temps throughout the country. I’ve noticed it popping up in my yard where it’s never been before.
Poison can grow in may different ways. It can grow as a ground cover, shrub, or a vine. The vine can reach 25+ feet up trees. There are many different varieties with many different shaped leaves. The old saying "leaves of 3 let it be" only pertains to a small portion on the varieties. I have put together some photos of the most common varieties found in the US. Color of the leaves may vary by region and season. The colors range from lime-green to deep red. Take a look at the photos by clicking here: http://www.household-helper.com/ivy.html .
If you find poison ivy in your yard it can be very difficult to eliminate. Ortho Poison Ivy Control is the best way to do it yourself. Read the directions carefully, the spray can also kill good plants. NEVER burn the ivy. The smoke contains airborne resins which will enter your lungs and has killed people in severe cases. The resins which will cause the rash will stay active over a year on gloves, tool handles, and even tires if you drive through it.
If you come in contact with it, time is very important. Wash with soap and water thoroughly. Then wipe the area of contact with rubbing alcohol. Call your doctor immediately! There are drugs that if administered within a certain time frame, can eliminate most of the rash.
