Topic :My Pipes are Banging

We have a single handle Moen shower/bath control and a valve that keeps water temperature constant when flow changes with the use of other taps. When the handle is turned to the preferred setting for a shower the pipes bang, Turning the handle to a warmer or cooler setting stops the banging but may not be suitable for showering. Can you tell me the problem and the fix?
Real simple problem...probably not an easy fix. The pipes are banging because they weren't secured in the wall. When the shower regulates the water temp. it is constantly turning the water on and off causing the pipes to vibrate. I get 2-3 of these letters each week...very common.

All you need to do is gain access to the shower pipes and strap them to the studs. It should stop the problem right away. Hopefully you have a door or crawl-space that allows for access to the plumbing.
Here is another question we received on the same subject:
Recently the hot water heater in my house was changed. Now every time the water is turned off abruptly there is a loud slamming noise. How can I get rid of that noise?
The pounding in the pipes is most likely caused by a loose pipe hitting somewhere. Copper flexes enough to allow for movement if not secured tightly. Have somebody turn the water on and off while you listen for the pounding. Once you find it, simply secure it.
A few words about water hammer:
There is a phenomenon called water hammer that causes pipes to make a sharp bang when a faucet or toilet shuts off. This is very real and pretty common with the invention of washerless faucets that shut off quickly. Most water hammer can usually be fixed by securing a pipe that's loose. If the problem can't be resolved, then you need to install a water hammer arrestor. They can be purchased at any plumbing or home repair store, and are pretty simple to install.
