Topic :Painting cupboards
I would like to paint my dark wood kitchen cabinets off white with yellow trim. How do I prepare them for painting, what kind of paint should I use and is there something I can put over the paint to prevent chipping. I really would like to find some transfers or stenciling to put on the doors, have you ever heard of transfers for cupboards. I would like something with sunflowers...Thanks for your help! |
I'm not sure what kind of finish is on the cupboards but is most cases it doesn't matter. I would start by taking down the doors so you can lay them flat. The paint will dry smoother that way, and they're also easier to work on.
Remove all the handles and hinges. Clean all the doors with naptha (available at hardware stores). This will remove all the dirt, grease, and oils that could spoil a good paint job. Sand the surfaces lightly with fine sandpaper to give the new paint something to cling to.
Paint away! I would strongly recommend going to a PAINT STORE...one that only sells paint. They will tell you the best brand for what you're doing. I like Pratt & Lambert, but it's not available everywhere. Let dry at least 2 days before adding a second coat...this will let the paint harden properly, preventing possible chips. Ask the paint store if you can use a roller with the paint they sell you. Some paints you can, some you can't, because they won't flow properly.
Follow the same method with the drawer fronts and the cabinet faces.
As for the stencils, they shouldn't be hard to find. Any craft store will carry sunflower stencils. I made a few calls about the transfers, and couldn't locate any company that makes them...only kid's room stuff like cartoon characters. |
