My shower drain leaks. How can I fix it?

What do I use to seal a leak between the drain sleeve and the drain pipe in
a shower, The leak is causing damage to the ceiling of the room below the
shower. I have to scrape the old stuff out first but I don’t know what to
use to replace what I remove. Can you help?
From the way you’ve described it, I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about. There really shouldn’t be and sealant on the pipes. It’s possible that what you’re seeing, is actually crud built up from years of leaking or from somebody else’s poor repair.
I’m just taking a wild stab here, but I’m guessing that where the two pipes meet there’s a nut. If you unscrew the nut there will be a large washer/ gasket that needs to be replaced. It should be pretty easy to replace provided you have the room to work on it.
