My MTD Chipper Shredder will only run at full choke. How can I fix it?
Topic :My MTD Chipper Shredder will only run at full choke.
I have a 7 year old chipper shredder that will not run unless it is almost fully in the choke position. Attempts to clean out the carburetor (and associated parts) has not helped. It appears that some sort of rebuild is in order, but I do not have an owner’s manual. Am I correct in my rebuild assumption? How do I get an owners’ manual for my MTD 4hp Chipper/Shredder?
If you need to run the shredder at full choke then it’s not getting enough gas. This could be as simple as turning the adjustment screws on the carb 1/4 turn out, or as complicated as a rebuild. In all my years of small engine work I’ve never seen a carb need a total rebuild. Usually it’s either a bad float valve or a clogged jet…both of which can be fixed by cleaning. (I would start with the adjustment screws).
You can call MTD for a new manual, but all you’ll get is how to operate the machine. It won’t have carb info in it. I would suggest going to the local lawnmower shop and pick up a copy of the engine book specific to your motor. They usually are about $10 and will tell you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about that motor.
