My motor is running very rough. What could be the problem?

I have a Toro rider with a 8 hp Briggs & Stratton motor and it was running great but all of a sudden it has started to back fire. I have cleaned the filter and nothing seems to work. I did mess with the carb setting but only seems to get worse.
Replace the spark plug. Don’t just clean it, get a new one. Then if the problem hasn’t gone away let me know and we’ll move on to the next step.
Reply: It worked! Who’d have thought a spark plug could cause that much trouble?
