Topic :Removing a lockset

I have a doorknob that needs to be replaced, however I can't get the existing knob off. There are no visible screws that I can reach. There are notches on the door handle the shape and size of a screwdriver. There is also what looks like a wire spring around the handle under the plate. Nothing is making the door knob loosen. What do I do? The reason I need to replace it is that a piece broke inside that retracted the bolt from the door jam. The door had to be taken off the hinges to get a family member out of the room. The door now does not stay shut because of the broken piece.
On one of the knobs there is the slot you saw. Insert a small screwdriver in the slot. Wiggle the knob off the shaft while pressing the slot. Once the knob is off, pry off the cover plate (gold or silver), and that will expose the screws to remove the lock set.
