Topic : I have a table lamp that the socket "burned out". What would I need to
repair it? Is it possible to do it myself? |
First, make certain the lamp is unplugged!!!!!
A lamp socket is very easy to replace. On the socket of the lamp right around where the switch is there will be a stamp that says either "press here" or "press". Push on that with your thumb and rock the socket back away from your thumb. That will release the socket. Slide the metal outer shell up from the socket inside. There will be a cardboard sleeve either still on the socket or still inside the sleeve. If it's on the socket remove it. There will be 2 wires attached to the socket. Unscrew the 2 wires. Take the socket to the hardware store and ask for an exact replacement (should cost $3-$6).
When reinstalling the new socket first thing you need to do is to make sure the wire ends are twisted tightly with no frays hanging loose. Then take the new socket and wrap one wire around one screw in a clockwise direction and tighten the screw. Repeat for the second wire around the other screw. I doesn't matter which wire goes to which screw.
Make the connections are tight and there are no loose wire strands hanging out. Then replace the cardboard sleeve over the socket and put the metal sleeve over that. Before snapping the whole thing back on the base check to see that no wire is protruding out of the cardboard and also check to make sure that the cardboard washer is still sitting inside the base where you
will be putting the socket back on. If everything looks good, replace the socket into the base and you're done. The main thing to remember is that the wires should not be touching each other or any metal inside the sleeves. |
