Is there a certain way they hook up lines to a pump?

I have an in-ground pool in the home i bought but i am having a hard time telling which incoming line is for the skimmer and the bottom drain. I have a total of 4 pipes coming up from the ground. And there are no instructions on the layout. Is there a general layout design on pool piping?
In a word….No. They can be plumbed any which way the pool guys feel like that day. Are you able to shut off the different zones one by one?
