How do I deal with a leaking bottom drain line?

Your answer to question regarding pool leak from main drain, you suggest closing off the main drain. Any suggestions on how to ’seal’ off the main drain in an in-ground swimming pool?
Usually sealing off the main drain is only done one way…under water. In most cases someone has to dive down, remove the cover, and put a plug in the line opening. The only other way I’ve heard of is to fill the line with a rubber compound to block it off from the top, but We’ve never found anyone who does it.
