household-helper Lawn Care Topics back

Topic : We live in VA on top of a mountain. We have tried for three years to grow grass. Our ground is very compacted with rocks and shell. Our front yard goes down hill so when we try to water it, it just runs down the hill. We have always used grass seed covered with straw. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I know it will be expensive, but 2 options came to mind. The first is hydro-seeding. That's where they come in with a truck and spray a grass-shredded newspaper mixture onto the ground. It sticks like glue. Most companies will guarantee grass or they'll keep redoing it until you have grass.

Second was sod rolls or plugs. Either one will work. The plugs will be slower, but cheaper. Rolls are quick but expensive. With plugs, you simply put in a hunk of sod every 18" and let the grass spread naturally. In about 2 years you'll have a nice lush lawn.
