Topic :Where to start on a tub faucet

My shower faucet is leaking. I have gotten as far as figuring out that it is the cold water side and that the knob for that side will not shut the water off all the way. Until I can figure out what to do I've been shutting the cold water off under the tub. If I can figure out how to change the wax ring on the toilet, this should be a piece of cake. I just need to know what steps to take so I don't really screw up. Thank you much.
Kind of a difficult repair from my end without seeing the faucet, but i'll give you some basics.

The first thing you'll need to do is turn both the hot and cold water off to the faucet and open both handles all the way open. Then you need to remove the handle. Most likely there will be a cap in the center covering the screw. Remove the cap and remove the screw. Pull the handle straight off. This is usually the hardest part, as the handles tend to corrode on the shaft very tightly.

If you can get the handle off, the next thing you need to look for is some sort of a nut around the shaft. Loosen that nut and the whole stem should come out.

Once you have it apart, take it to a hardware store and ask for a replacement. You may be able to get by with just a new washer...I don't know from here, but the store should be able to help you out on that.

Please keep in mind that tub faucets are usually the hardest faucets in the house to disassemble, don't worry if you can't get it apart. Simply spray the nut with some oil, put it back together and try again the next day. Sometimes it takes a week of trying to get it. Don't force it!

To reassemble, just follow the directions in reverse.
