Topic : My kitchen garbage disposal seems to be on the fritz. You can hear it "hum" when you turn the switch on, but nothing else happens. I have "reset" the disposal which does not seem to be helping. I have also tried to clean it out by reaching in a seeing if I can feel something in there that maybe shouldn't be. I don't know what else to do and would like to try to fix it before I have to call someone. Can you give me any suggestions at all??
It's hard to say what the problem might be. I get a few of these questions a week. The only thing I can tell you to do is to try the trusted broom handle trick.

With the disposal OFF. Take the end of the broom handle and put it into the disposal opening. Tilt the handle so that the end is touching the side of the disposal. Start rotating the handle until you hit one of the blades and the handle stops. Keeping pressure on the handle against the blade turn the handle around in circles until it moves freely. This may or may not work
depending on if the disposal is just jammed or if it's seized. Usually when they start jamming like that it's usually a sign the motor is weak and close to needing to be replaced.
