household-helper Electrical Topics back

Topic : Our home is quite old, but has an updated circuit breaker panel for the electrical system. This summer, our clothes dryer began flipping the breaker (it was on it's own breaker). Thinking the dryer was shot, we finally bought a new one. However, upon the second day of use, the breaker began flipping again. Soon the breaker for the water pump was flipping off as well.

Meantime, back at the ranch house, the circuit for the attached garage stopped working entirely, breaker or no breaker. Also, a kitchen outlet flipped a breaker. All of these seemed to us electrically uninitiated as isolated incidents. Now, however, the breaker for the furnace and the powder room is flipping as well, especially when the dryer is in use.
Help! We're too broke to pay attention, and an electrician is out of the question. Eagerly awaiting your help, shivering amidst a pile of dirty laundry.......
This is a tough call without seeing your house. You could have any number of things wrong. Most of them are very simple for an electrician (sorry, I know it's a dirty word). My first guess would be you have a batch of bad breakers all dying at once (it does happen more than you'd think). Some kinds of breakers do get weak as they age, and yours may be hitting that age.

If the electrician verifies that the breakers are the problem, then let me know and I can tell you how to change the others. FYI...many breakers older than 10 years can be very difficult to get, you may need his connections to get them.
