| Topic : How do I replace a bad circuit breaker switch? |
I can only generally answer your question because there are so many different kinds of panels.
Most panels have four screws on the face holding the face plate and door on. Make sure you turn off the main breakers at the top of the panel before undoing the four screws.
Remember that the panel still has live wires in it even after the main has been shut down!!! Shutting the main off will help minimize the risk of shock but will not eliminate it!!! Use of insulated tools is a must. I recommend wrapping all metal parts of tools with wire tape until they are covered with 3-4 layers. This will help prevent your touching the metal while working and also help prevent short circuits from tools.
Locate the bad breaker and pull it out from back to front (the back being the end opposite where the wire is connected). Most breakers snap into place along the power rail and have a tab in the front which locks in. Some breakers have lock-down screw also.
Remove the wire from the breaker.
Replace the original breaker with the exact replacement. Same amp rating, size and brand. Failure to do this may result in overloaded circuits and fire.
Attach the wire to the new breaker and set the front into the slot. Rock the breaker to the back and push it hard onto the power rail. This may require considerable force. I like to use the butt end of a hammer handle to push on the breaker and make sure it's seated. Do not hammer it into place!!!! If the breaker isn't seating right, remove it and try again. It should be at the same level as the rest of the breakers when seated properly.
Tuck the wire back in neatly, replace the cover, and turn the main back on. You're done.
