About the only thing I can tell you is to try to isolate the area and then look for a point of entry. If your house is 30 years old or newer, then it should be easy to narrow down because wall cavities are typically closed. If it's an older house with balloon framing then the critter could be almost anywhere.
To help narrow it down, you can try removing the face plates on electrical outlets and sniffing. This is a direct opening into the wall and should help you to at least get closer. The good part is that even if you don't locate it, it will usually stop smelling after a month or so (unless it's a big critter like a raccoon). Most mice and squirrels only stink for a short time. |
