Topic :Damp basements
As summer progresses, I have been getting more and more people asking about how to eliminate mold and mildew problems in basements. The first thing I tell people is CIRCULATE THE AIR!

Air circulation is the key to keeping your basement from becoming a haven for molds and fungus. It can be as simple as opening a window, getting a dehumidifier, or running a fan in the basement.

The second most important factor is to eliminate sources of water around the foundation. Direct downspouts away from the house, install gutters if there are none, and grade the soil away from the house.

To eliminate the mildew simply use a bathroom cleaner designed for mildew (i.e. Tilex mildew remover). Spray it on, let it work a while, and scrub with a brush before rinsing. Some people like to use bleach and water, but I would advise against it due to a lack of ventilation in most basements. Bleach can release fumes which can burn mucous membrane, or worse overcome you. The bathroom cleaners are NOT fume free however, make sure to open some windows and run a fan or two while working.

Mildew and mold spores can pose a real risk to your health! If you have problems with moisture in your basement it's best to deal with it now, before it's too late.
